“If you can't describe what you are doing as a process, you don't know what you're doing.”

                                                   Dr. Edwards Deming

Knowledge Based Engineering

Imagine having the knowledge of Einstein, Michelangelo, DaVinci, the combined knowledge of the NASA team that put Men on the Moon or simply the aggregate knowledge of those engineers that currently work for your business. Knowledge based engineering is about capturing and utilizing that collective knowledge to assist in the faster development of better products that surpass the customer’s needs.

Engineers love to design … that is what we went to school for. However, management must put processes and systems in place to channel that design energy. We don’t want them redesigning the wheel and finding that it is still round but rather creating the next “breakthrough”. We want them to learn from our mistakes and do everything in our power to keep those mistakes from recurring.

At the highest level Knowledge Management includes:

Lessons Learned

Previous designs (Specs, analyses, drawings, test results, …)

Models

Libraries

Standardization

Knowledge Management is not an easy task. Gathering and cataloging the information, though time consuming and laborious is the easy part. Developing a data architecture and keeping the knowledge up to date is difficult.
